In the second [part]: "If they have no faith, give little care to manage [their affairs]" means compelling them to return to the correct [path]; "managing" refers to supplying and attending to affairs. "If they have faith, give freely without limit" means there will surely be no wasted expenditure. "Allowing them to be brought to the monastery" is because they have no relatives to whom they may turn. "Washing the mother without touching" is because touching does not allow an exception even for parents. "The father is treated like a śrāmaṇera" means that his maintenance is the same as that of the lesser community. The Biography of Tang Monks says: "Jingtuo constantly carried his mother at one end of a pole and scriptures at the other; at mealtime, he would leave his mother under a tree and enter a village to beg for food in order to provide for her. Moreover, the vegetarian Daowu also walked carrying on a shoulder pole scriptures, Buddha statues, his old mother, and a broom. He always said to people: 'Does not the sūtra say: Sweeping the saṃgha's ground over an area like Jambudvīpa is not as good as [sweeping] a palm's breadth of the Buddha's ground? One who personally provides for his mother is equal to a bodhisattva of the bhūmis.' When someone offered to help carry [the load], Ji said: 'She is my mother, not someone else's mother; the burden of this physical frame is also my own body. Having a body necessarily brings suffering; how could I use my suffering to trouble others? Therefore, my body takes suffering upon itself first; please do not help me.'" This is a magnificent capacity, how can it be compared to the ordinary way? Although there is a minor violation of the teaching, in principle it conforms to the great accord; exhausting one's strength to repay kindness is unprecedented throughout past and present.
