In the next section, first, ignorance is described. 'Barely' (jin) means roughly. 'Not comprehending the intent of the Dharma' means general confusion regarding the three above. The two lines 'completely devoid of...' invert the causes and conditions above; 'making offerings to the field of merit' inverts the tracks of renunciation above. In the note, 'not entirely absent' means that those possessing faith are not obscured. 'Mostly...' onwards sets forth unprincipled conduct in three clauses: first, it describes generating karma without wisdom, the first part rebuking social gatherings, which is mostly so in the present era; 'furthermore...' onwards rebukes encroachments and damage: 'plotting to strip away' means scheming harm, and 'rash intrusion' means violation and offense; 'indulging in stubborn folly' means having no fear of cause and effect; 'or...' onwards rebukes plotting to seize; 'fully...' onwards comprehensively demonstrates cause and effect. Second, it explains the wise obtaining benefit. Third, it cites the sūtra to corroborate. The sūtra text gives a twin metaphor; 'decline and benefit' below corresponds to the field and garden. The puncture vine has thorns; it resembles water caltrop but is smaller. 'The object before one' refers to the monastery.
