Twelfth: The former part explains chewing tooth-wood; first, it brings out the faults of not chewing. "Phlegm-fluid" (癊) refers to phlegm. "Lead to" (引) is like advancing. The Mahīśāsaka-vinaya teaches washing and discarding it. The Dharmaguptaka-vinaya requires a secluded place. The two matters of major and minor [defecation and urination] are brought in incidentally. Next, it explains walking meditation (caṅkramaṇa); first, it reveals the benefits. First, it brings familiarity; second, single-mindedness; third, blood and qi become balanced and harmonious; the fourth and fifth can be understood. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya shows the manner of walking. "Drawing the ground" means making a straight path, not letting it curve or bend; or one may use bricks and stones to make it. The *Nanhai jigui zhuan* says: In the land of the five Indias, both monastics and laity often practice walking meditation, walking straight back and forth, following only a single path. (This means stacking bricks and stones to form a straight path, narrow and long; people walking back and forth is similar to warp and weft, hence it is so named.) It also says: The base of the Buddha's walking meditation path was two cubits wide and fourteen or fifteen cubits long. (Three feet six inches wide, and about two zhang six or seven feet long.) Above, the stone was carved in the shape of blooming lotuses, two inches high and fourteen or fifteen inches wide, representing the marks of the Sage's feet. In the *Sanqian weiyi*, it explains the place where it is done: it depends on what is appropriate for the location and cannot be rigidly restricted.
