The next section. 'Jiàn' means a cage or trap. The method for chanting dhāraṇī over snakes is to use dhāraṇī to bless them so that they do not harm people; the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya says: 'My loving-kindness to the dragon kings, in the heavens and in the human realm; with this loving-kindness of mine, may all afflictive poisons be extinguished; with my gathering of wisdom, I intentionally slay this poison; flavor by flavor, poison without flavor, broken and destroyed, enter the earth.' 'Window light' means the place where light penetrates between the lattice. 'Loose cage' is a bamboo woven net. 'Lattice': the Zhigui says: 'In windows and openings, it is made of woven wood.' In picking lice, the Vinaya text only clarifies the method of picking; hence, following the analogy of snakes and rats, one must protect their lives. Worldly people are ignorant of the teaching, mostly roasting them with fire, soaking them in boiling water, or crushing them with fingernails to kill them; having never had compassion, they indulge in killing; their minds are identical to rākṣasas, their deeds equal to butchers. Although the lives of creatures are tiny, the pain of death is no different; please open the sacred instructions and strictly take heed of this.
