3.959

小乘戒中。緣身口者，謂制法也。犯問心者，推業本也，此據《四分》空宗為言。執下二句，明持失也；或專慕人天，則滯於凡福；或計為至道，則墮於利使。違下二句，明犯報也。

In the Hinayana precepts, "taking body and speech as objects" refers to the formulated regulations. "Questioning the mind regarding offenses" examines the root of karma; this is stated according to the Emptiness School of the Four-Part Vinaya. The two lines from "Attachment" clarify the faults in maintenance: if one exclusively aspires to human and divine rebirth, one remains stuck in ordinary merit; if one conceives it to be the ultimate path, one falls into the sharp bondages of views. The two lines from "Transgressing" clarify the retribution for violations.
