First, on determining the school: The Three Baskets divide their schools, and what they expound is therefore different. In terms of practice, although they universally aid one another, in terms of teaching, each has its respective domain. Past sages failed to examine this thoroughly and indeed frequently encroached upon other spheres. They broadly discussed scholastic treatise studies, thereby confounding the Vinaya vehicle (namely, commentaries such as the Zenghui, which, following the text, explain the four fruits of nirvāṇa and so forth, extensively enumerating sectional headings according to the marks of dharmas). Furthermore, the treatises they cited mostly relied on the Abhidharmakośa and Mahāvibhāṣā, using the Substantial School to explain the current Nominal School. This can be called inverting the backbone of the school and distorting the flavor of its principles, causing later keen minds to waste their time and effort in vain. Being unworthy inheritors of the transmission, it is our duty to rectify this.
