Regarding the number of strips, in the first section: 'strip' means a vertical strip; from five, seven, nine, up to twenty-five, all follow odd numbers, hence the reason is queried. As for what is said in the Commentary and Manual: the Karma Commentary states that because a śramaṇa practices compassion and takes benevolence and nurturing as the foundation, which corresponds to the yang transformation of the worldly realms, the numbers are not even. (Odd numbers are yang numbers, because they can engender and generate; even numbers are yin numbers, because they can wither and contract.) As for also pointing to the Manual, this must be an omitted passage from the Yichao (Meaning Manual).
