The next section: First, the mark of practice is indicated; this is bodily karma. From "As..." onward, mental activity is cited and shown, clarifying that one does not sit in vain. Among the four dharmas in the sūtra, the first two remedy faults, which is benefiting oneself; the third is benefiting others; the fourth is devoting the mind to superior states—since sleep and restlessness would lead to parting from mindfulness of the Buddha, one does not lie down. Below, pointing to the treatise refers to the Vimuttimagga; it says: "The merit of always sitting cuts off the places where laxity arises, except for physical illness (which is an exceptional circumstance of sickness), separates from the defilement of the pleasure of touch, reduces entanglement with sleep, is often quiet, is capable of cultivating dhyāna-concentration, and is the practice of good people; this practice is beyond doubt."
