The long-term resident is called the host, and one passing through temporarily is called the guest. With respect to the three realms, there is neither host nor guest; but now, looking toward the saṅghārāma, there is indeed the distinction of duration and temporariness; host and guest are conventionally distinguished to explain reception. However, according to the vinaya, the host is ordained to receive the guest: the host must provide entertainment and hospitality, while the arriving guest must possess deportment; thus it is said that they receive one another.
