In the fourth [part]: in the Mahiśāsaka-vinaya, covering the roots [of the senses] means that in principle they should be exposed. In the Five Hundred Questions: first, it explains covering the corpse. That it must be announced to the Saṅgha is because it is property of the Saṅgha. Skirts and saṃkakṣikās must now be applied according to this rule. (The worldly saying that one must don the five-strip robe is incorrect, for that is a regulated item kept as a reward for nursing the sick.) From "must not" onward, next, it explains the funeral procession. Because these all belong to the Saṅgha, [carrying them] beyond five [krośas] constitutes theft. The text clearly shows the order of what is brought out in three [points]: first, bringing out [by] relatives, namely masters, monks, and the like; second, leading the Saṅgha—"śarīra" is translated here as "remains," which means the dead body; third, borrowing property of the deceased—this is Saṅgha property, and only permitted if there is none. Causing double compensation means that the caregiver seeks other items equivalent to the original, submits them to the Saṅgha to perform the formal act, and the harmonious Saṅgha returns them, as in the chapter on the "Two Robes." From "its" onward, third, it shows the funeral rites. The "litter" (yu) is the vehicle for carrying the coffin.
