"Families" means having men and women. Corrupting families is of four kinds. First, corrupting families on the basis of families: obtaining things from one family and giving them to another family. The place where the things were obtained hears of it and is displeased; the place where they were given thinks of repaying the kindness, saying: "If someone gives to me, I will repay them; if they do not give to me, why should I give?" Second, corrupting families on the basis of material gain: obtaining gains in accordance with Dharma or leftovers in the bowl, and giving them to a householder. The recipient thinks: "I should repay his kindness. If he does not give to me, why should I give?" Third, corrupting families on the basis of friendship: if a bhikṣu relies on a king or minister, acting on behalf of one householder and not acting on behalf of another householder. [The favored one] thinks: "Because he acts for me, I shall make offerings; if he does not act for me, I shall not make offerings." Fourth, corrupting families on the basis of the saṃghārāma: if a bhikṣu takes the flowers and fruits of the Saṃgha and gives them to one householder but not to another. The one who receives them thinks: "I should make offerings; if he does not give, I shall not make offerings."
