(There are eight cases of no offense: if one has not obtained the robe; if vikalpana was performed; if it was sent to another person; if the robe was lost; if it was intentionally ruined; if it was made into a non-robe; if it was taken under presumption of friendship; or if it was forgotten. The opposites of the above are all niḥsargika. If one does not forfeit a robe subject to forfeiture and instead trades it for another robe, that is one niḥsargika-prāyaścittika and one duṣkṛta. This robe subject to forfeiture must be forfeited to the Saṃgha, or down to a single person; one must not forfeit it to a dissentient community—that does not constitute a valid forfeiture, and is a duṣkṛta. Bhikṣuṇīs incur the same offense. For the lower three assemblies, down to their lower precepts, all incur a duṣkṛta. Those not committing an offense: within ten days, if one transfers it by vikalpana, or sends it to another person; if one thought it was taken by thieves; thought it was lost; thought it was burned; thought it was washed away; if, when one's robe was taken or lost, one took it to wear; if another person gave it to make a coverlet; or if the person entrusted with the robe travels far away and routes by water and land are cut off—in such cases, not performing vikalpana and not giving it to another are all non-offenses.)
