佛在舍衛國。六群持衣囑親友，往人間行。彼為出衣曬之。比丘問言：「佛聽畜三衣，不得有長。此是誰衣？」具答，被訶，白佛竟，因制此戒。

(The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. The group of six bhikṣus entrusted their robes to friends and went traveling among people. The friends brought out the robes to sun them. A bhikṣu asked, "The Buddha permitted keeping three robes and not having extra ones. Whose robes are these?" When fully answered, they were rebuked. Having reported it to the Buddha, he formulated this precept on that account.)
