佛在羅閱祇。蓮華色尼持食往山，與諸上座。彼有比丘著弊故納，尼脫所著貴價換之，後著弊衣。為佛怪問，訶彼比丘，因制此戒。

(The Buddha was in Rājagṛha. The bhikṣuṇī Utpalavarṇā went to the mountain with food for the elders. There was a bhikṣu there wearing worn-out rags; the bhikṣuṇī took off what she was wearing, which was costly, and exchanged it with him, afterward wearing the ragged robes. The Buddha questioned this with surprise, rebuked that bhikṣu, and on that account formulated this precept.)
