佛在舍衛國。有二居士夫婦共議，欲與跋難陀買衣。乞食比丘聞已具告。彼到二家，語令共作。居士譏嫌，比丘舉過。佛因訶制戒。

The Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī. There were two householders and their wives who discussed together, wishing to buy a robe for Upananda. A bhikṣu begging for food heard this and told him all about it. He went to the two households and told them to make it together. The householders criticized and reproached him, and the bhikṣus reported the fault. The Buddha thereupon rebuked him and formulated the precept.
