佛在羅閱城。有一大臣，為跋難陀留其食分，兒以五錢取食。跋難陀來，取錢寄市肆上。居士共嫌，比丘訶責，王共臣論，佛廣說喻，因訶制戒。

The Buddha was in Rājagṛha. A minister reserved a food portion for Upananda, and his son took the food in exchange for five coins. When Upananda came, he took the coins and deposited them at a market stall. Householders criticized him together, bhikṣus rebuked him, and the king discussed it with the minister. The Buddha expounded similes at length, and on that basis rebuked them and laid down the precept.
