佛在舍衛。六群畜鉢，惡者置之，常覓好鉢，畜之遂多。居士遊觀，便譏似陶師瓦肆無異。比丘舉過，佛便訶責，而制此戒。

The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. The group of six [monks] kept bowls; setting aside inferior ones, they constantly sought fine bowls, and ended up keeping a great many. Householders wandering and sightseeing then criticized them, saying that they were no different from a potter's earthenware shop. The bhikṣus reported the fault, the Buddha then rebuked them, and laid down this precept.
