佛在舍衛國。跋難陀縫僧伽梨，乞線遂多，持線使織，自作繀，看織。居士譏嫌，比丘舉過。訶制此戒。

The Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī. Upananda was sewing a saṃghāṭī and begged for an excess of thread; taking the thread, he had it woven, wound the spools himself, and watched the weaving. Householders criticized him, and bhikṣus reported the fault. [The Buddha] rebuked him and laid down this precept.
