佛在舍衛。客比丘在邊房敷臥具宿，不語便去，臥具爛壞，蟲嚙色變。見過白佛，因制此戒。

The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. A visiting bhikṣu spread bedding in a peripheral room to spend the night, and left without saying anything. The bedding rotted and spoiled, was bitten by insects, and became discolored. Seeing the fault, they reported it to the Buddha, who laid down this precept on this account.
