佛在舍衛。難陀僧差教授尼已，默然而住，愛道重請，說至日暮。尼出祇桓，城塹中宿，為俗所譏。比丘白佛，佛便訶制。

The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. After Nanda was assigned by the Saṃgha to instruct the bhikṣuṇīs, he remained silent. Mahāprajāpatī invited him again, and he taught until sunset. The bhikṣuṇīs left the Jetavana and spent the night in the city moat, drawing ridicule from the laity. The bhikṣus reported this to the Buddha, and the Buddha rebuked [him] and instituted the precept.
