佛在舍衛。迦留陀夷為作大衣，便裁作婬像，成已付尼，令在眾後著之，生俗譏笑。諸尼以過白佛，因制此戒。

The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. Kālodayin made a saṅghāṭī for [an unrelated bhikṣuṇī], cutting it into lewd shapes. When finished, he gave it to the bhikṣuṇī and had her wear it at the rear of the assembly, giving rise to ridicule and laughter from the laity. The bhikṣuṇīs reported this fault to the Buddha, who instituted this rule on account of it.
