佛在舍衛國。婦與姑諍，還毘舍離。時阿那律欲往彼國，此女為伴。夫便逐得，打阿那律幾斷命根。比丘以事白佛，便訶制此戒。

The Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī. A wife quarrelled with her mother-in-law and was returning to Vaiśālī. At that time, Aniruddha wished to go to that country, and this woman became his companion. Her husband then pursued and caught them, beating Aniruddha almost to the point of cutting off his life-faculty. The bhikṣus reported the matter to the Buddha, who thereupon rebuked [them] and laid down this rule.
