佛在舍衛。長者為跋難陀故飯僧，彼時欲過方來，比丘食竟不足。又羅閱城中大臣得果，令跋難陀於僧中分；後食已，詣餘家。比丘告二過，佛雙制此戒。

(The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. An elder offered a meal to the saṃgha for Upananda's sake; Upananda arrived only when the time had nearly passed, so that the bhikṣus did not have enough after finishing their meal. Furthermore, a minister in Rājagṛha obtained fruits and asked Upananda to distribute them among the saṃgha; later, having eaten, he visited another household. Bhikṣus reported the two faults, and the Buddha formulated this precept concerning both.)
