2.55

佛在羅閱城。有波利婆沙、摩那埵比丘在下行坐，六群比丘以所犯事向白衣說之，有過者及餘比丘皆慚。比丘舉過，佛故訶制。

The Buddha was in Rājagṛha. There were bhikṣus undergoing parivāsa and mānatva sitting in the lower rows. The group of six bhikṣus spoke of the offenses they had committed to white-robed laypeople. The offenders and the other bhikṣus were all ashamed. Bhikṣus brought up the fault, and therefore the Buddha rebuked them and formulated [this precept].
