佛在羅閱城。有十七群童子，大者年十七，小者十一，以信出家。比丘即度受大戒。不堪一食，夜啼。佛覺問知，夜過集僧，便立法制戒。

The Buddha was in Rājagṛha. There was a group of seventeen boys, the eldest being seventeen years of age and the youngest eleven, who went forth out of faith. The bhikṣus immediately ordained them with upasampadā. Unable to endure eating only one meal a day, they wept at night. The Buddha awoke, inquired and found out, gathered the saṃgha after the night had passed, and then instituted the rule and laid down the precept.
