If, perceiving it to be living, one cuts it oneself or instructs another to cut it, roasts it oneself, boils it oneself, or instructs someone to do so, all incur a downfall [prāyaścittika]; if doubt arises, it is a duṣkṛta. For the seven kinds of forms of grasses and trees, destroying them oneself or instructing another to destroy them is a downfall; if doubt or perception [of uncertainty] arises, it is a duṣkṛta. If one drives a peg into living grass or trees, or damages them with fire and the like, all incur a downfall. If one severs living grasses and trees for the most part, it is a downfall. Cutting what is half-dry and half-living, as well as failing to say "Take note of this, look at this," all are duṣkṛtas. Cases of non-offense: if one says, "Look at this, take note of this"; if cutting dry and withered grasses and trees; if dragging timber or dragging bamboo over living grasses and trees; straightening fences and screens; clearing away moat stones; taking cow dung; if living grass covers the path and one pushes it aside with a staff; if supporting them with tiles and stones and cutting or injuring the grass and trees [incidentally]; if clearing the earth of a walkway, sweeping the ground of a walkway, or pounding the ground with a staff and mistakenly pushing aside and breaking living grass—there is no offense.
