佛在舍衛。居士設供，手自斟酌。自下飯已，入內取羹還，食飯已盡；時與羹已，復還取飯，飯還羹盡。譏似餓人。比丘舉過，因訶制戒。

The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. A householder prepared an offering of food, personally serving it. After serving the rice himself, he went inside to fetch soup and returned, but the rice had already been finished; when he then gave the soup, he went back again to fetch rice, and when the rice was brought, the soup was finished. He criticized them for resembling starving people. The bhikṣus brought up the fault, and [the Buddha] consequently rebuked them and formulated the precept.
