世界皆闇冥。當護持此戒,如犛牛愛尾;
An illuminated person who can guard the precepts will obtain three kinds of joy:
Fame and offerings,
And upon death rebirth in heaven.
Contemplating such consequences, the wise should guard the precepts;
With pure precepts and wisdom, one directly attains the supreme path.
Just as all the Buddhas of the past,
And likewise those of the future,
And the Bhagavats of the present,
Able to overcome all sorrows,
All reverently honor the precepts—this is the nature of all Buddhas.
If someone, for their own sake,
Wishes to seek the Buddha path,
They should respect and revere the true Dharma; this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
The Seven Buddhas were Bhagavats who eradicated all saṃyojanas;
Having spoken these seven Prātimokṣa Sūtras, freed from all fetters,
They have entered into nirvāṇa, all proliferation forever extinguished.
Spoken by the revered Maharṣi of noble conduct, the precepts praised by the sages and worthies,
Practiced by the disciples, lead to entrance into quiescent nirvāṇa.
When the Bhagavat was about to enter nirvāṇa, he gave rise to great compassion,
Assembled the community of bhikṣus, and imparted such instructions in the precepts:
"Do not say that after my nirvāṇa, those of pure conduct will have no protector;
I have now spoken the Prātimokṣa Sūtra and have also well expounded the Vinaya.
Although I enter parinirvāṇa, you should regard [these] as the Bhagavat.
When this sūtra long abides in the world, the Buddha-Dharma will flourish;
Because of its flourishing, one is able to enter into nirvāṇa."
If one does not uphold these precepts, conducting the poṣadha as ought to be done,
It is just like when the sun sets, and the world is plunged into darkness.
One should guard and uphold these precepts, as a yak cherishes its tail;
Sit gathered in concord in one place, as spoken by the Buddha.
I have now spoken the Prātimokṣa Sūtra, and the Saṃgha's poṣadha is concluded.
Whatever merit has been spoken by me now in speaking the Prātimokṣa Sūtra,
I dedicate to all sentient beings, that all together may realize the Buddha path.
