The Buddha was wandering in Śrāvastī. Kālodayin’s lustful intentions flared fiercely, and his physical appearance was emaciated. Dwelling alone in a room, with fine bed, mattress, and quilts, bedding spread on the floor, and food in abundance, according to his thoughts he manipulated [his genitals] and discharged [semen]; his sense faculties became joyful, and his complexion lustrous. The bhikṣus raised the fault and addressed the Buddha. After countless rebukes, the Buddha formulated this precept.
