If he initially accepts the words, it is a duṣkṛta. If he goes and conveys them without reporting back, it is a thullaccaya. If he returns and reports back, it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa. If he sends a messenger, or sends a letter, a finger-seal, or an overt gesture, depending on the number of matchmaking acts, once spoken clearly, with every going and returning there is a saṃghāvaśeṣa for each; if it is not clear, it is a thullaccaya. Excepting the two orifices, if he matchmakes by speaking of the other limbs and joints of the body, it is a thullaccaya. If he matchmakes for non-humans, paṇḍakas, or ubhatobyañjanakas, it is a thullaccaya. If he matchmakes for animals or human males [with each other], it is a duṣkṛta. If he carries another's letter and delivers it without reading it, or runs other errands for a layperson, it is a duṣkṛta. A bhikṣuṇī commits the same offenses. Exceptions where there is no offense: if a man and woman were formerly together, later separated, and are reunited; if, on account of parents being ill or imprisoned, he reads a letter and carries it to them; the same applies to faithful and energetic layfolk; the same also applies if acting as a messenger for the Buddha, the Dharma, or the bhikṣus.
