At that time, on the day of reciting the precepts, there were sick bhikṣus, or those caring for the sick, and those on business for the Three Jewels, who did not come to hear the precepts. The Buddha said: 'They should convey their consent and declaration of purity, according to whether it is extensive or abbreviated. If they do not show bodily signs or speak with the mouth, it is invalid. If the sick person is severely ill, he should be carried into the midst of the saṃgha; if it is feared that the illness will worsen by moving him, then perform it outside the sīmā. This is because there is no expedient means by which poṣadha may be recited by a karman of a dissentient community.'
