The Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī. Assaji and others committed evil and corrupted households in the Kiṭāgiri settlement. Bhikṣus brought up their fault, and [the Buddha] dispatched Śāriputra and others thither to carry out the expulsion and censure. When the legal act was being performed, they slandered the Saṃgha and would not accept it. Reporting the fault to the Buddha, he admonished them and laid down the precept.
