At that time, there was a bhikṣu who lodged there. Donning his robes and carrying his bowl, he entered the village to beg for food. His Dharma robes were neat and orderly, his gait dignified, keeping his eyes downcast and walking straight ahead without looking left or right, begging in proper order. When the householders saw him, they said to one another: "Who is this person? Walking with downcast eyes, neither looking around nor talking or smiling, neither socializing nor greeting us with friendly inquiries. We should not give him food or drink. He is not like Assaji and his companions, who socialize with people—and what was described above—to whom offerings should be made." Then that bhikṣu, after much hardship, barely obtained food. He went to where the Buddha was, and [the Buddha] asked him: "Is your dwelling pleasant? Is the Saṃgha in harmony? Have you suffered for lack of food and drink?" He fully reported to the Buddha. [The Buddha] then rebuked them from afar and ordered that expulsion be carried out.
