The Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī. Many bhikṣus encountered bandits and lost their robes, and they arrived at Jetavana. A faithful person heard of this and sent many robes to give to them. The bhikṣus said, "Stop; the offering has already been made. Because we have three robes, we do not need [them]." The group of six [bhikṣus] told them to take them: "Take them and give them to us." Consequently, they accepted more. The bhikṣus reported the offense, and the Buddha thereupon formulated the precept.
