The Buddha said: 'When the saṃgha recites the precepts, because of a lie told through silence, one commits a duṣkṛta.' Saying 'obstacle to the path' means it obstructs the four dhyānas, the three formless attainments, and the four fruits. He addressed the bhikṣus: 'Just as that great ocean does not tolerate a dead corpse, and if there is one, drifts it ashore, so too is my Dharma: it does not tolerate a dead corpse. What is called a "dead corpse" means someone who is not a śramaṇa or of pure conduct, yet calls himself a śramaṇa of pure conduct, who violates precepts and evil dharmas, impure, defiled, concealing wrong views, inwardly harboring rot while outwardly appearing whole and clean, like a hollow tree; though sitting in the assembly, he is always far removed from the assembly, and the assembly is also far removed from him.' Thus one knows that only when one has repented of offenses can one properly hear the precepts.
