The Buddha said: "If a bhikṣu does not take joy in the brahmacarya, he is permitted to relinquish the precepts and return home. If he later wishes to go forth again and practice the brahmacarya within the Buddha's Dharma, he should be ordained to go forth and may receive upasampadā. What is not considered relinquishing the precepts? If one is oneself raving mad, mentally disordered, in extreme pain, mute, or deaf, or if one relinquishes them before such a person, or if people from the central and border regions relinquish them to each other, it is not accomplished. If done in jest, during sleep, before an ignorant person, if one does not speak oneself, or if the other person does not understand, none of these accomplishes relinquishment. If one says, 'I relinquish the Buddha, I relinquish the Dharma, I relinquish the Saṃgha, the upādhyāya, and the Vinaya,' or 'I take up the householder's way,' etc., this is called 'relinquishing the precepts.'"
