Now I venture to rely upon the root Vinaya, fully recording the standard text, and following the Buddha's explanations, I compose this commentary. The text is only one fascicle, the same as what was transmitted of old; both adherence and transgression are clarified, which now differs from antiquity. May it allow both beginners and advanced students to study together, and the foolish and the wise to comply alike. With rough knowledge, one is complete in the three kinds of Vinaya holders; with refined mastery, one serves as a master for great transformation. When sought with this, the accomplishment of salvation reaches the utmost. Moreover, because each precept has its origins, false explanations are not lacking; if not made clear as a mirror, it will end in baseless reliance. Therefore, citing by category of precepts, I have abridged the essentials and supplemented them. Making the visible characteristics commonly classified and the light and heavy distinctly apparent, it will suffice to enrich oneself and illuminate virtue, and suffice to protect the Dharma and rectify the times. Facing the text, do not derive errors from the text; contemplating the meaning, do not borrow from external meanings. How could this merely bequeath the untainted state to oneself? It will also rescue those with karmic conditions. Therefore I have made these notes and written this preface.
