If one reviles directly while speaking of wholesome dharmas, saying, "You are an araṇya-dweller," up to "a meditator"; if one reviles by metaphor, saying, "You are like a meditator"; if one reviles by comparing oneself, saying, "I am not [like that]"—whether expressed clearly or unclearly, these are all duṣkṛtas. For a bhikṣuṇī, it is an offense of falling; for the other three assemblies, it is a duṣkṛta. As for non-offense: speaking out of mutual benefit, for the sake of the Dharma, for the Vinaya, for the sake of instruction, out of close affection, or in jest, by a slip of the tongue, or by mistake—these are [non-offenses].
