The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. Two brothers both became bhikṣus. One of them was gluttonous and fond of eating; he did not know whether a meal was satisfied or not satisfied, whether food was leftover or not leftover, and obtained and ate it. The other reproached him with the fault. This brother harbored resentment, and seeing that the other had eaten, he forcefully urged him to eat, and then reproached him with the fault. The bhikṣus brought up the fault, and on that account the Buddha formulated the precept.
