If he receives food and eats at an improper time, with each swallow he commits a prāyaścittika. If 'untimely' food exceeds the improper time, or 'seven-day' medicine exceeds seven days, both incur a prāyaścittika. Taking lifelong medicine without cause is a duṣkṛta. Exceptions: making jaggery, because of the rule; if a sick person takes emetic or purgative medicine and the hour has passed, boiling barley so that the skin does not break and drinking the strained broth. Also, if one regurgitates food from the throat and swallows it, there is no offense.
