The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. Upananda quarreled with a bhikṣu, harboring resentment in his heart. He then led him into a place in the city where there was no food; knowing that the time for returning to the Jetavana had already passed, he then said, "You are an extremely evil person, causing me to obtain no food! Go away quickly!" That [bhikṣu] obtained no food and was utterly exhausted. Bhikṣus brought up his transgression, and because of this, [the Buddha] rebuked [him] and formulated the precept.
