If it is alcohol, but lacks the color, smell, or taste of alcohol; or if it is not alcohol, but has the color, smell, or taste of alcohol—neither may be consumed. If it is cooked or blended with alcohol, eating or drinking it is in all cases a prāyaścittika. If one drinks sweet liquor or vinegar-like wine, or eats yeast-cakes or wine dregs, all are duṣkṛta. The three cases of perception and doubt entail a prāyaścittika. There is no offence: if one is ill and other medicines do not cure it, and one uses alcohol as medicine; or if one applies alcohol to an ulcer—in all such cases there is no offence.
