The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. Upananda was close friends with a bhikṣu who repeatedly committed offenses and told him, "Do not tell anyone." Later, Upananda quarreled with him and immediately said, "You committed an offense," and being unable to bear it, he spoke of it. Bhikṣus raised the fault and reported it to the Buddha; he then rebuked him and laid down the precept.
