The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. Queen Mallikā made offerings to the Buddha with devout faith, encouraged the king to take faithful delight [in the Dharma], and allowed bhikṣus to enter the palace without obstruction. Kālodayin entered the palace at an inappropriate time; the queen was dusting the bed, her clothes slipped off, and her form was exposed. The bhikṣus reported the fault and informed the Buddha, who thereupon rebuked him and instituted the rule.
