The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. An outside follower of other teachings was walking along the road, stopped to rest, and departed leaving behind a thousand liang of gold. A bhikṣu saw it, carried it away for him, and returned the gold to him. [The traveler] then claimed that the gold was less; the king passed judgment, penalized him, and confiscated the gold for the court. The bhikṣus reported this fault to the Buddha, who thereupon rebuked him and formulated this precept.
