The Buddha was in the city of Aṭavī. The group of six [monks] were repairing the lecture hall for the Buddha and dug the earth all around by themselves. The householders criticized and censured them, saying, "They do not know the true Dharma, and cut off the life-faculties of others." They reported it to the Buddha, who laid down the precept on this account. Later, they instructed people to repair the lecture hall, saying, "Dig this, set this aside." The householders criticized them again, and the bhikṣus reported the fault; the Buddha laid down the precept again.
