The Buddha was in Rājagṛha. A householder and his wife had both attained the vision of truth, and had no attachment or stinginess, even toward their own flesh. Since their offerings were vast, their clothing and food were completely exhausted. The householders criticized and mocked them, and the bhikṣus reported the fault. The Buddha ordered that by a jñaptidvitīya-karman the bhikṣus be prohibited [from accepting food there]; later, when they became wealthy again, it was revoked. He then formulated this precept.
