The sixth major section: the four pratideśanīyas. It is divided into three as before. 'Prāti' translates as 'individual'. 'Deśanīya' translates as 'self-confessed offence'. That is, one individually confesses one's offence facing another person. In the specific enumeration of the precept marks, the first precept is that receiving food at a layperson's house from an unrelated bhikṣuṇī is an offence with each swallow. If the bhikṣu is sick, or if it is placed on the ground and given to the bhikṣu, there is no offence. These four precepts take their name from the confession; therefore, the precept text cites the words of confession. One should invite the master of confession, saying: 'Let the Venerable One focus his mind! I, the bhikṣu named so-and-so, now invite the Venerable One to be the master of confession for a pratideśanīya, and so on, down to: out of compassion (spoken once).' Next, the formal ritual of confession states: 'Let the Venerable One focus his mind! I, the bhikṣu named so-and-so, went to a layperson's house and received food from an unrelated bhikṣuṇī, committing with each swallow a blameworthy deed, the number of which I do not recall (or state according to the actual count). What ought not to be done, I now confess to the Venerable One (spoken once).' [The master] says: 'Reprove your own mind.' He replies: 'Yes.' Or he may say: 'I shall respectfully uphold it.'
