The fifty-sixth, the precept on bathing: The text says 'must not exceed', which means one must not exceed the prohibition established by the Buddha by bathing in less than half a month; it does not mean that one is required to bathe once every half-month and must not exceed that time afterwards. This precept has six exceptions: First, 'hot season', which in the Vinaya refers to forty-five days of spring together with the first month of summer, meaning from the first day of the third month to the middle of the fifth month, totaling two and a half months. The eighth fascicle of the *Sarvāstivāda-śāstra* says, 'India becomes hot early, therefore this period is taken.' Thus, depending on whether the hot season in a given place is early or late, one calculates two and a half months, during which bathing is without offence. Second, 'illness', down to the body smelling foul. Third, 'working', down to sweeping the ground in front of a house. Fourth, 'windy times', down to a single whirlwind. Fifth, 'rainy times', down to a single drop of rain touching the body. Sixth, 'traveling far', which is half a yojana.
