Twenty-ninth: the precept against being separated from the three robes for more than six nights when dwelling in an araṇya during the kārttika month with suspicion and fear. The text states: 'When the single kārttika month is completed.' According to the other three vinayas, the general situation is that for those doing the later retreat, they are not yet permitted to depart elsewhere during the kārttika month; since those of the earlier retreat have all already departed, [a monk] now dwelling alone fears dangers from outside bandits, so he is permitted, among the three robes, to take whichever single good robe and send it to a house in a village to deposit it for six nights. Before the dawn of the sixth night, he must reunite with the robe and spend one night together with it before depositing it again for six nights. Earlier commentators who claimed that one may deposit the robe only after the kārttika month is completed are mistaken.
